We know from the book that having their first sex together, they’d been somewhat stoned. Elio comes to Oliver’s room, and finds him smoking a reefer. It’s just occured to me: without any doubt Oliver, waiting for Elio at midnight, needed a reefer for a little bravery, to put down his inhibitions, because he was nervous AF. He’s a ’straight‘ no homo -guy – until he isn’t. Once made up his mind, and for his resolve not to waver, he needed a reefer not to chicken out or talk his way out of it.

I’ve learnt that reefer means cannabis cigarette from this ask, I love an education! Since more attention was brought to the fact they were stoned during their first time, it has been the only thing on my mind. I agree that Oliver needed to find courage and something to calm his nerves. I know this isn’t said in the movie but in the book Oliver also admits how nervous he is:

(Elio) ‘I’m nervous’

(Oliver) ‘Me too.’

(Elio) ‘Me more than you.’

I think Oliver knew how much this was going to break him and I know some people won’t agree, but I admire him for going ahead with it anyway. He seems to have lived a very selfless life and I think he deserved to experience true happiness, even for a little while. 

oliver is just as nervous as elio, he’s just better at hiding it. when oliver writes ”grow up” he might as well be saying it to himself…
