Kelpies appear in Scottish mythology and are shape-shifting water spirits that can take the form of a horse or a human. They lure humans down into lakes and rivers and drown them before devouring them. Some equine kelpies are equipped with with a bridle and a saddle, appearing ready to be ridden, but if they are mounted they will run off and drown their riders.
