Sometimes I wonder if native English speakers appreciate how much more comfortable the internet is for them than for the rest of the world

Like, you can go on tumblr and simply read stuff in your mother tongue? Amazing. Go on youtube and you don’t have to replay some sentences ten times to try to understand what they’re saying? Incredible. Look for practically anything on google and know that there will be a fuckton of results that you can read without having to spend half the time looking up words in a dictionary? Fascinating. Make a post or send an ask without panicking that you’ll make a silly mistake or that they won’t understand what you meant? Unbelievable.

honestly i never fully realized how much privilege me and other native english speakers had re: the internet until this post so thank you OP

I never thought about this until I started following some people who posted in both French and English and I got really confused when all of a sudden these French paragraphs would show up and I was like this isn’t a French website what is going on?

But of course it’s an everything website, it just defaults to English because a small number of countries expect everyone to conform to their conception of normal.

i’m gonna focus on the leisure and fun subject here. i remember as a kid all the cool websites were in english. the cool shit was always english dominated or in english only. that’s a huge part of why i became good at english so fast, but that’s also something english speakers probably have trouble understanding. to get to the cool things and stay hype, more often than not we have to learn english. and being bilingual is a cool thing and all, and i don’t regret learning english, because it’s literally so important to know it. just be nice to people learning and realize that being a native english speaker means that you have wildly different experiences of the world than everyone else.

I’m used to stirring the pot, nonny. It’s okay. That is a legit comparison. I’ve never heard anyone cry pedophilia over Rose and Jack, even though their ages are as disparate as Oliver and Eilo’s. 

The same for Dirty Dancing’s Baby and Johnny. She was only 17. He was in his 20s and there was never any outrage over that coupling.

It seems people only have a problem with it when it’s a same-sex relationship, and that says a whole lot more than anything they want to mention about age difference, imo.
